Figure 10-33. Divergent inlet duct used on a high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine. Part of the fan discharge air is used as the inlet air for the core engine.

The air inlet for turboprop engines has caused some unique problems for engineers. The propeller reduction gears are located at the front of the engine and thus interfere with a smooth flow of air entering the compressor. Figure 10-34 illustrates three types of inlet ducts for turboprop engines. The ducted spinner inlet is the most efficient, but it is complex to maintain and to anti-ice. The conical spinner with the inlet duct around it is an effective alternative. For engines that have offset reduction gearing, the air scoop can be located below or above the reduction gears, depending upon which way the gears are offset.
